Manuel Gonçalves, was born May 10, 1953 in Vilela Seca (Lagoela). He began his professional career in August 1968 in the construction of the Vilarinho das Furnas dam with a team of surveyors and worked there until 1971.

During the year 1971 he worked in the tungsten mines of Carris na serra do Geres, at the time of the “Toca do Javali.”

Having migrated to Lisbon at age 18 he began waiting tables in the Cel-Cat workers’ bar in Venda Nova. It was a difficult period; troops, colonial war… getting a job… hard work, studying, eating and sleep was life.

In 1973 he worked for IBM Portugal (by Manpower); – It was at this time that IBM abandoned its facilities on Rua Duque de Palmela and moved to a new, larger, and more modern facility in Praça de Alvalade. Expecting to be incorporated into the Portuguese army in June 1974. He accepted on April 10, 1974 a proposal for work at the Rectorate of the Classic University.

On April 10, 1974, he entered the University of Lisbon. He served the Portuguese army from June 1974 until December 1975. In 1976, he returned to the University of Lisbon.

In April 1978 he moved to the Faculdade de Economia  of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, (now Nova School of Business and Economics) where he has remainded to this day (see details).

He has been a Teaching Assistant (Adjunct) in accumulation at the Faculdade de Economia UNL from 1 July 1987 to 30 June 2009.

For 10 years, from 1997 to 2007, he led the team of Thomson Prometric Testing Center in Portugal that ran several tests, the most popular being the  TOEFLGMAT and GRE.
